To Make Amends

I’ve sobered up and I’m not super happy about it. Now I’m standing in the middle of Primm with a headache, a lingering feeling of guilt and a pack fill of teddy bears. I’ll be honest… this isn’t the grand future I imagined for myself.

Nevertheless, my conscience demands that Joe do something in penance for Lily’s death. It might be out of character for Joe to be helpful, but he was busy filling his pack with loot while his companion (a kindly grandmother) was gunned down – that’s got to shake even the most amoral character.

So, where to start? The local store surely… who has their finger on the pulse of a town more firmly than the local trading post?

I can see my house from here!

I can see my house from here!

Regrettably, there is no one IN the local general store. I have to struggle with the instinctive urge to start looting the joint. There is plenty of stuff I could make use of (not the least of which is a broken droid on the counter, which I’m sure I could fix up); but I’m supposed to be making amends, not taking additional advantage of those less fortunate that me.
Instead I leave a Lily Bowin memorial teddy bear on the counter.
*sigh*

This isn't what it looks like. Unless it looks like I'm thinking about stealing your priceless eye-bot 'cause, that's what I'm doin'.

So where is everyone?

Turns out everyone is still hidden in the old Casino, despite the fact Lily gave her life to clear the Powder Gang out of the old Hotel. Seriously? What the hell, guys?

Well, it turns out that without a sheriff to keep an eye on things, everyone is too scared to go back to life as normal. And the deputy is not even remotely interested in the promotion.
Fair enough, I guess. So I suppose that Joe’s task is to find a sheriff for Primm. Then the town will be free to return to normal and Lily’s sacrifice won’t have been in vain. And as a bonus, Primm will be open for business again – a free and happy trading partner for Goodsprings.

Also, at the risk of sounding selfish and self serving, that’s a nice easy plan that shouldn’t feature anyone shooting at me. I was all for Ghost town gunfights and daring raids while Lily was around to (literally) crush any opposition, but now I’m back on my own I’ll be wanting to avoid any openly hostile situations.

Looking around the empty streets of Primm and remembering the bloodied body of the last sheriff (and his wife), I can’t help but wonder at who would be up for the task.

I decide that a little bit of urban renewal is in order. I start by dragging the corpses of the Power Gang (and one lone courier that was laying about) out of the streets and into a garbage pile.

When I’m done the town still doesn’t look too appealing as a holiday destination, but it does look a little less like an unholy nightmare.

Sorry, mate... but you're messing up the joint... I'm just going to drag you over there, where you can decompose in peace, m'kay?

So options for a new sheriff… this should be a breeze. Who wouldn’t want to risk their life, day and night, for a town that’s already been overrun by armed gang members at least once?

The old store keeper had a few ideas… Option A was an no nonsense sheriff who was arrested when suspects started ‘vanishing’ from his previous home town. That just seems like a terrible option on multiple levels. Firstly, that means he’ll be living at the old prison, the home of the powder gang. Secondly… even his description scares me.
Option B is to reprogram an old securitron robot for the task. Frankly, the unit doesn’t look like he’s up to much. He’ll have to be my backup option.
The last option is to ask the NCR to move in. Sure, they sat about like chumps while the Powder Gang ran rampant, but they have guns and now that it’s free they might be willing to move in and annex the town.

So… convince a heavily armed foreign military to obey my bidding and risk their lives for a town that they have actively ignored despite repeated requests in the past…
No biggie, right?
